The Chilton Monoplane

The Chilton DW 1 was designed by A. R. (Reggie) Ward and the Hon. Andrew Dalrymple and was built in the outbuildings at Chilton Lodge. The prototype (G-AESZ) first flew in 1937 and was powered by a Carden-Ford 32HP engine. The aircraft had a tare weight of less than
400 lbs and cost £315 ex-works to purchase. Four examples were built before WW2 caused production to be halted.

Sarah Scrope, as the great-niece of Reggie Ward, has inherited the plans of the aeroplane. She regularly receives requests from all over the world to build Chilton DW 1s, of which there are currently many in production. Several of the original aeroplanes and a number of newer versions are flying to this day.

In 2017 there was a celebration at Chilton Lodge to mark the 80th Anniversary of the first flight of the Chilton DW 1. A number of the original aeroplanes attended and were admired by fans from all over the world.
